Kids are using a gaming device to access porn out of thin air, even at school Kids like to keep secrets from adults, there’s a kind of power that comes from knowing the adults are clueless.

Jeff Harris brought his new portable gaming device to school and then he pulled a stunt that got him grounded for a month, as well as an in-school suspension.
What mom thought was just a game is actually a very sophisticated piece of electronics that a clever kid can use to capture pornographic images out of thin air. In the school’s library, Jeff was eager to show his friends his new Sony Play Station Portable, or PSP. On a dare, Jeff showed his pals how the PSP could magically display images of naked women.
Jeff had used his PSP to tap into the school’s wireless internet connection. And once he was on the net it was just a few seconds before he ended up on a pornographic web site.

There’s no doubting the popularity of loading porn onto a PSP. Its even been nicknamed the play station “pornable”.
A slow day? Nothing more intersting to spin? Journalism at its best? If there is anything that is taken out of thin air, it’s this news story.
It is now Sony’s fault that porn is easily accessible on the Internet? Why not target Microsoft, Mozilla and other web browser developers too? Why stop there? Lets ban the Internet and impose a curfew on all minors 24/7. That ought to put an end to all wars and solve world hunger.
When will people learn that the Internet isn’t a theme park for children?

The worst part here is that they’re not blaming who should be blamed — the school’s IT department. Schools get what’s called E-Rate funding for their Internet connections from the federal government. One of the provisions for keeping it is making a good faith effort to block porn and other unsavory sites. (Basically anything non-educational. Yes that includes sites where you can play Flash games.)
If the kid was able to find porn that quickly they apparently weren’t even trying hard to block it. I know the school system here makes it near impossible for the kids (or teachers/staff) to access porn from the schools. It’s an ongoing job for them and is multi-layered as well. (The state contracts out all E-Rate Internet with a company who provides a first level of proxy filters to block stuff. Then the school blocks stuff that they find getting through those filters on their own as well.)
I’m amazed he only got an in-school suspension in these days of Zero Tolerance. Some schools have expelled kids for having ibuprofin in their purses/backpacks/etc! Oh well, I’m glad the punishment was sane, and kudos to his parents for grounding him, at least they’re doing something and not expecting Sony to do all their parenting for them.
Oh yeah, just wait until the Nintendo DS gets a web browser, there’ll be tons of stories like this then since the DS is more widespread with K-12 students.
And man, that’s one damned cute image!
–what the hell? That is a damned idiotic school. The high school I go to bans most sites, and gives why. The only way to break the firewall would be using proxies, and, being a PSP owner, I don’t know of any proxies for it.
Also - right click, save.
Yeah… a) The school had an unsecured wireless network. That’s retarded. Even if it wasn’t being abused by kids, that leaves the network open to people leeching off of it… urgh. b) As the poster said above, most schools have a filter.. now, having said THAT, porn is so pervasive on the internet that any blacklist type filter isn’t going to get much of it. You just can’t.
You can use anonymizing sites, particularly small ones. For instance, set up a proxy webserver at home and log in directly… most filters won’t get it. Of course, you’ll still get in trouble. And yeah, the kid should’ve known better. That’s a pretty appropriate punishment.
Now, about the Nintendo DS, there was an article a while ago about how pedophiles could use the DS’s wifi to seduce kids. Using PictoChat. Yeah. How’s that for ridiculous.
Here is the DS story:

That DS story makes me sad for our nation’s news.
Silly people, who wants porn sites when you can visit loli sites on a PSP >.
ZOMG The Internet is EVILL? I knew it!! Only pervs surf the internet (wait, does that include me?)
I guess having a ton of porn on my PSP doesn’t make me a better person, eh? How about Bokusatsu Tenshi? I have that on me PSP. Yeah.
But really, truly sad. All news are jumping on the “blame video games” bandwagon.
kawaii lil girl….. psp….. *salivates*…
k, lets cut to the chase…can i get loli images on my psp?
are you being sarcastic…? I can’t tell……. of cource… you can
I believe whoever watches porn should be shot in the head, stabbed in back, drowned and then eaten alive by a big fat duck. Of course, on Sundays only because God has better things to do during the rest of the week.
Actually, there is a problem. Before, if a parent wasn’t stupid enough to buy his kids a notebook AND allowed them to use the internet only under surveillance AND double checked when he got to friend’s houses, was reasonably sure he wouldn’t be at risk of porn/pedos/etc.
Now, anyone with a videogame can do everything he wants without any possible form of control. This is the story.
The filters can never catch it all certainly but well maintained ones catch a fair amount of it and definitely all the easy to find stuff. That’s why this is so surprising, the kid apparently got to a porn site in very little browsing time, meaning the school wasn’t filtering very well at all!
The funniest thing is how the article is going on about how kids are making use of how adults are clueless…
and yet the journalist is himself, clueless. “Out of thin air” indeed.
Of course it would be NICE if porn came out of thin air…save me the trouble of buying it ^_^
Today’s Penny Arcade sums it up nicely.

Next thing we know, we have porn beamed into our brains.
Silly DrmChsr0 it’s called “imagination”, a US government ultra secret project to turn people into homosexuals, niggers, pedophiles and of course liberals……….
