Today I decided to attempt to beat Utada Hikaru’s record in Tetris DS and of course also get max score. I’ve never been a big Tetris player. I was just a little kid the last time I played a Tetris game. As a matter of fact I was so young that I wouldn’t even hit myself (assuming I had a vagina).

I fire up my copy and search for Endless mode without any luck. Apparently I had to beat Marathon mode before I could access Endless mode. Two hundred lines — piece of cake.

I turn Endless mode on and clear line after line after line. The speed of the blocks reaches a plateau on or around level 20. It’s kind of impossible to fall faster than instantaneous. It took a couple of minutes to get used to the speed, but once it clicked it was highway to hi-score — or so I thought.

I don’t know how many hours I played, it felt like an eternity. I eventually passed 9,000,000 and with it Hikki’s hi-score. Only one million left until i reach max score, I said to myself. One million points and then I’ll never have to endure the torture of some of the horrible classic themes used as background music ever again.

As I approached the “magical” 9,999,999 score, Sweden got their asses kicked hard by Germany in the World Cup. Words can’t describe how happy I was. I love seeing sad Swedes and especially to lick their tears. Yummy. It was like a double win for me… or was it?

I lined up four nice rows and cleared all four with an l-piece. Finally, 9,999,999. I took a look at the upper screen: 10,002,050. What the fuck, 9,999,999 isn’t max score?!? Fuck this shit, I’m not playing to 99 million points. *turns off DS*

In the end I did beat Utada Hikaru on my first try nonetheless. Notice how the current high score in my picture is 0. Sweden didn’t make it to the quarter finals which hopefully means that I won’t have to stand the patriotism bullshit any longer. To sum things up:

abq - Hikki: 1-0
abq - Sweden: 1-0
abq - Tetris DS: 0-1

Oh yeah, one last thing. Tetris DS sucks.

By the way, assuming you advance one level for every 10 lines you clear, I cleared 3780 lines before I realized it would take me a week to reach max score.
