not just another anime blog
I’m aware that this is the Internet, a place entirely devoid of any form of logic and reason, but I will try to explain the situation anyway. Is it unfair that Suiseiseki got removed? Totally. But Suiseiseki was the cause of the problems and from my point of view removing her was the only option I had save pulling the plug of the whole thing. And don’t give me the crap that Evangeline cheated too. That was the work of the anti-desu camp; remove the cause and you remove the problem as clearly illustrated with today’s Eva rematch.
Some of you might think it is outrageous, but you are forgetting something; what other solutions do you have? I can’t magically tell the difference between legit votes and proxy votes. I have taken some precautions, most proxy servers are blocked because they use HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR and HTTP_VIA variables, but those who don’t look like any other user.
What about Suigintou? Despite her questionable loli status, I didn’t want to remove her. I do however believe in prevention before intervention (except when it comes to pregnancies, not that it matters with lolis anyway) and would rather prefer to avoid future shitstorms. In any case against better judgement I will have a round with Suigintou tonight. If it goes well we’ll see what happens.

wooyay
I’m kinda glad that to did pull Suiseiseki (but i’m sad suigintou got pulled) but the votes did become unfair seeing as people were just posting links in 4chan (or other forums/boards) telling people there to vote for Suiseiseki. That made the polls really unfair. So far, most polls only have an average of 600~700 votes but for the Suiseiseki vote it went upto 1700 (i think around there).
I’m kinda amazed that there weren’t a billion posts with just “desu” a million times…
Yes! 3 cheers for Suigintou! She’s back in the race!. Lets hope no one ruins it this time.
So… I guess I’m not going to awaken the hoard tonight. I hope Suigintou wins
junkjunkjunk etc.
Things appear to be going well so far, and the other rounds since the debacle have been perfectly fine. I love Suiseiseki (but hate the memetards) so while it pains me to see her go, I fully understand and accept it.
I think we’re doing pretty good for now so the less noise we make about it the better. Thanks, abq, for what has been in large part a very fun tourney.
It’s your competition, and you can disqualify whatever entrant you like for whatever reason you like. The competition’s credibility will only suffer if the reason is weak (but let’s be honest, this really is only for fun).
Lacking an infrastructure capable of dealing with ballot-stuffing, Suiseiseki deserved to be disqualified for the abuse that took place. Suigintou didn’t, so I’m glad she’s been put back in the compeition. She might still be disqualified ex post facto, but at least then the reason behind disqualification might be legitimate.
>>what other solutions do you have?
It’s far too late now (although I did mention it in the vote thread), but it’s possible to do a quick port scan on the most common proxy ports (3128, 8080, 1080, 80) of each IP address that voted - could be automated with nmap and would weed out the majority of proxies. It doesn’t stop proxy voting, but it would have made a recount possible.
Anyway, with Suigintou’s reinclusion you’ve handled this more gracefully than I initially thought, so well done.
The plugin doesn’t log ports.
port scanning is something the could have happened externally, doesn’t need to be part of the voting system at all (hence the suggestion of just using it for a recount). you have the ip addresses, you could just plug them into something like nmap and if one of the ports listed above is open (ie, accepting connections), you can bet that the server is an anonymous proxy.
doesn’t matter at all now though, because anonymous proxies come and go quite quickly, and scanning them now wouldn’t reveal anything useful.
Whoever wins, for me, Suiseseki is the real absolute winner. Unfair? Perhaps. I can understand the reasons for her removal, but all that ‘unfair’ voting just proves how successful she is. Voting because of simply ‘desu’ is legitimate enough for me.
Bah… i am having trouble voting since the Suiseiseki round cause i keep getting “403 Forbidden error” and i ain’t on a proxy but would a dynamic IP be an issue?
All i can view is the battle roster. (this is a random time i have been able to get in to vote)
A dynamic IP could be a problem if someone with the same hostname as you abuses it. But neither you nor your hostname are on the ban list. The only things that are blocked are tor exit nodes and proxy servers that send proxy-ish information.
Nice decision abq. Let’s hope for the best for the rest of the battle, less the 4chan hoard.
