   Dude. Build a RAID 1 or 5 and stop worrying about HDD crashes. Srsly, ppl. It’s the way to go for peace of mind. And the 5 is better since you get almost RAID 0 read speeds.

   RAID 1 is no way to go, trust me, I have RAID 1 and it’s a pain. There’s an old naval saying: “never go to sea with two chronometers”. Well, RAID 1 is the exact equivalent of two chronometers. RAID 5 is the way to go, with at least 3 hard drives, if not more for good measure.

   As for the influence on these matters of a god or gods, maybe you should read Adrian Rogoz’s short story “The Altar of the Stochastic Gods”. The title of this work is often mistranslated from the original Romanian as “The Altar of the Random Gods”, which shows just how little the average translator knows about statistics.

   If the data is important, then RAID 1 is better then nothing. Of course, if speed is important, you can always just do a full disk back up to a secondary harddrive — or even use two seperate ones just in case something happens during the data transfer between the two and BOTH get frizzled.

   I’ve also heard about RAID 5 potentially being a problem with larger hard drives if you don’t immediatly slap in a new harddrive to replace a failed one.

   I have RAID 1 on my laptop (only 2 harddrive spaces available), and it saved my bacon when one of them died a horrible death.

   Definitely raid5. I’ve got 4 500GB drives on my desktop, giving me 1.5TB of safe raid5 storage. Peace of mind was worth the cost. The speed increase was a nice bonus. I can actually max out a gigabit ethernet connection.

   My next project will probably be a drobo with another 4 500GB drives, to use as a mirror. I’m just the paranoid type.

    I have worked w/ recovering hdds w/ hardware failures. this tip worked 2 out of the 3 times i tried. mount it in the newest ubuntu (or another linux distro w/ ntfs3g).
    i was able to get a 100% data recovery of my windows drive.

    What you should do is have 2 hard drives - one for the operating system [Windows Vista] and another drive for storage because the drives with OS are always crashing and storage only drives rarely if ever crash [naturaly at least]

    Linux and the GNU tool “ddrescue” saved my job when a supposedly robust RAID5 system crashed horribly.

    I don’t think that’s a virus. Don’t really know what it’s called or why that happens. With me it started when I password-protected my account. When I typed in my password and hit the little green arrow (Windows Standard Log-On Screen), I’d see my wallpaper, but no taskbar or desktop icons. So I’d go into my task manager and log off then log back on and everything’d be back to normal. So I took my password off and wait till I hear some little “beep” noise the computer makes when it’s setting things up when I’m at the logon screen before loging on. So far, so good.

    I’ve found Active File Recovery (http://www.file-recovery.net/) to be quite useful on the Windows side (not sure what OS you have). After installing a new OS on a new hard drive, stick the ‘dead’ one back in the computer and see how much you can recover. I’ve got back pretty much everything from two hard drive crashes that way. You can use the demo version just to see if the program can read the old drive.

    Anyway, just another option.

    RAID would be kinda hard since it’s a notebook. I haven’t given up on recovering some of my precious porn yet, but I can’t do much until the sata to usb-cable arrives.

    That is why I love my Mac. With TimeMachine everything is backed up to the external drive automatically. I don’t have any worries about data going missing.

    There is a way to get a raid-ish setup on a notebook if you’re not looking for portability. A company called Data Robotics makes a USB gadget called a drobo. You load it with any SATA drives you want, any capacity (there’s room for four drives, and you don’t even have to power it off to install or replace drives) and it automatically works everything out internally for redundant raid-like safe storage. As far as your computer is concerned, it’s just a big USB drive. If your OS can handle a thumbdrive, it can handle this gadget.

    The drawback is that it’s $500 without drives, and isn’t very portable. The advantage is that it takes zero computer knowledge to use. And no, I don’t work for them.

    Why bother with raid? Just buy a few 500GB drives and copy-pasta the files into each drive. Its not that hard (or expensive). A separate file server for very Important stuff would help……

    Yeah, need to have back ups. I have back ups of everything since 1994 but did not back up my flash drive and bang it died. I lost a lot of precious stuff like my Java progs and anime. I have a lot of baggage, but I still have it.

    Also, multiple drives with duplicate files on different computers stops all of that. Also I have burned a lot of anime and other documents onto dvd’s so I can keep my drives clean.

    Buy a Macpower Taurus + 2 TB HDs + a SuperDuper! License.
    Switch to Non-RAID-Mode and you have one HD for Backup and one HD for Time Machine in the same Case. The Smart-Backup in SuperDuper! needs only a few minutes a day.

    Remember, boys and girls, there are still exactly ZERO Mac OS X viruses in circulation… This is not to start a flame war, but rather remind you that most hard drive “crashes” are not physical problems at all, but related to viruses, spyware, or general OS corruption.
